Obituary for Wilmot S Draper (Draper)
DOVER – Wilmot Strathy Draper, MD, 86, of Bayview Road, Dover, NH, died peacefully on June 9th surrounded by family at his home.
Son of George Barnard Draper and Alison Huggins Draper, Wil grew up in Fanwood, NJ. He graduated from Kent School, Cornell University, and New York Medical College, and completed his dermatology residency at the University of Pennsylvania. He served as Assistant Clinical Professor of Dermatology at Boston University School of Medicine and at the Medical University of South Carolina. He was a long time fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, a former president of the New Hampshire Society of Dermatology, a member of the New England Dermatological Society, and a member of the Dover Rotary Club.
He had a 21 year career as a US Navy medical officer, including duty in San Diego, CA; the Philippines; Philadelphia, PA; Portsmouth, VA; the Panama Canal zone; Chelsea, MA; Charleston, SC; and five years in Japan. While stationed in Japan, he was an associate editor of The Japanese Dermatological Association’s Journal of Dermatology and consultant to the Tokyo Medical and Surgical Clinic treating English speaking business and diplomatic personnel. After retiring from the Navy with the rank of Captain in 1982 he wanted to return to Dover where he had fond memories of family visits. In Dover he had a solo dermatology practice for 17 years.
His interests included travel, photography, reading, bicycling, hiking, and kayaking. In recent years he has been mostly at home due to a complex neurological condition. At home he enjoyed sharing stories and jokes with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Barbara, three children, Elizabeth (Steven) Wilkinson of New Haven, CT; Alison Draper of New York City; and Allen (Marina) Draper of Danvers, MA; and four grandchildren, Alex and Nick Wilkinson and Ethan and Miles Draper.
Burial service led by Father Duncan Johnston of St. Paul's Episcopal Church to be held in July at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield, New Jersey.
