Obituary for Waldron B. Haley Dr.

Barrington - Dr. Waldron Butler Haley of Barrington NH died on July 14, 2014 at Hyder Hospice House of Dover following a long illness. The son of Lawrence Dow Haley and Cassie Mae Hall, he was born in Dover NH on November 21, 1919. He attended the one room Oak Hill schoolhouse in Barrington, Dover High School, and the University of New Hampshire (Class of 1941). While a student at UNH he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity, a member of the lacrosse team, and class treasurer. He also played saxophone in the UNH marching band, a skill that he would continue to use during his military service. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941, Dr. Haley was drafted into the army and trained for military service in South Carolina. While there he came in first in a sharpshooter competition, and as the winner was offered either the sum of $10 or three days of leave. He chose the latter and used the time to return to New Hampshire to marry his high school sweetheart, Grace M. McDaniel of Barrington, on March 17, 1943. As a member of the 100th Division in the war, he was sent to Europe, landing at Marseille and marching north through Stuttgart, Germany, finally arriving in Paris at the time of the German surrender. After military service he returned to his native New Hampshire briefly before deciding to attend Temple University in Philadelphia under the G.I. bill, where he earned his DDS in 1952. He and his wife and the first of their five children returned to Barrington, and he set up his dental practice in Dover, NH, where he remained practicing for almost 25 years. While living in Barrington with his wife and children, he was extremely active in civic organizations and local politics. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club and the VFW, served on the Barrington School Board for several years, and was an active alumnus supporting the UNH Alumni Association and the Dover High School Alumni Association. He also was active in church affairs as a member of the Barrington Congregational Church, serving as a deacon and a member of the church choir for many decades. After his retirement, Dr. Haley enjoyed many of his favorite pastimes, especially working in his forest acreage cutting and trimming trees. He loved to travel with his wife, visiting such places as Jamaica and Puerto Rico, Spain, Germany, France, Scandinavia and Russia. He was an avid Red Sox fan throughout his life and would be found afternoons and evenings in front of the television whenever there was a televised game. Dr. Haley was predeceased by his wife Grace M. Haley on April 5, 2011. He leaves a sister Olevia Haley Watson of Newcastle, ME; as well as five children: Lawrence G. Haley of Austin TX, Donetta J. Haley of Barrington NH, Alan D. Haley of Baltimore MD, James W. Haley and his wife, Carina Haley of Barrington, and Vanessa Haley Rizzo and her husband Mark Rizzo of Nashua NH.
