Star was born October 21, 1956 in Haverhill, Massachusetts as the first of five children to Joan Viola (Allen) and Arthur John Hartford, Sr. Star grew up in Madbury, NH and graduated in 1974 from Oyster River High School in Durham, NH where she excelled in art and theatre, receiving recognition for her pottery and drawing, and acting in many of the school drama productions. After high school, Star joined the United States Air Force, graduating with the first class of female cadets. After completing her service to her country, she moved to San Bernardino, California where she was an executive secretary at a law firm. Wanting to be closer to family, she moved back to New Hampshire and worked as a pipe-fitter at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard before finally pursuing her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse. She earned her BS in Nursing at the University of Kentucky – Louisville and was employed as a labor and delivery nurse at University Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky for many years. She loved nursing so much she also worked as a visiting home nurse and taught CPR classes to adults and children. Star enjoyed several recreational activities, including drawing, cooking, reading, and sewing. One of her favorite past times involved her membership in the Society for Creative Anachronism, a worldwide organization dedicated to the study and reenactment of Renaissance and Medieval Times. While in this group, Star was awarded the title, “Lady of the Order of the Laurel”, for her extensive study and exception artistic skill in Fiber and Clothing Art. She was well known for her period costume creations which included handmade gowns, hats, and all the underlinings. Star was preceded in death by her father, her third son David Roth, and her oldest niece Crystal (Hartford) Ross. She leaves behind four sons, Terence Cole and Michael Cole both of Henderson, Nevada, Matthew Halderman of Elizabethtown, Kentucky, and Bryan Halderman of Madbury, NH; her mother Joan Hartford of the home; her four siblings, Tamara (Keith)Ballantyne of Columbus, Kansas, Arthur Hartford Jr of Madbury, NH, Donald (Lisa) Hartford of Barrington, NH, and Laurie (Fred) Lorenz of Murray, Kentucky; two granddaughters, Crystal Cole and London Roth; one grandson, Zachary Cole; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
