Obituary for Sidney Alfred Leslie Pilgrim

Durham: Sidney A.L. Pilgrim, 84, of Mill Road, died Oct. 20, 2018 at the Dover Center for Health & Rehabilitation. He was born in Berlin, NH on December 24, 1933. He had been a resident of Durham since 1964. He was the widower of Faith (Martin) Pilgrim, who died in June 1995. Mr. Pilgrim worked 32 years with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Soil Conservation Service, as a soil scientist. He graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a degree in Agronomy in 1955. He was also a member of the UNH ski team. His soil scientist career began in Woodsville, NH. He worked in Indiana from 1961 to 1964, returning to Durham as the State Soil Scientist for New Hampshire. He retired from the USDA in 1989. He was appointed as an Adjunct Professor of Soil Science at the University of New Hampshire in 1979. He loved this second career, teaching Soil Science and Wetland Science until his retirement in 2015. At UNH he taught for the Department of Natural Resources, the Division of Continuing Education and the College for LifeLong Learning. He also taught at Antioch College in Keene. He served in the US Army from 1956 to 1958 and with the New Hampshire Army National Guard in Woodsville. Family members include a son, Paul Pilgrim, and a daughter, Kelly Pilgrim of Durham; a sister, Beverly Hickey of Virginia; three brothers, Peter and John of Littleton, NH and Donald of Oregon; and several nieces and nephews. A burial service will be held at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in West Bath, NH on Monday, October 29, 2018. Family flowers, only.
