Russell D. Hayes passed away January 26 at home after a yearlong struggle with pulmonary fibrosis. He was the son of Sumner A. and Pauline (Wiggin) Hayes. A lifetime resident of Barrington other then 4 years 4 months spent in the Air Force stationed at McQuire Air Force Base in New Jersey where he met his wife, Betsy. When released from the Air Force, they moved to New Hampshire, where they built their home in Barrington.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Elizabeth “Betsy” (Maple) Hayes, a brother, Rodney (Donna) of Ocala, FL, and nephews, Stephen (Hilary) Hayes and children Todd and Stephanie of Northwood, Chad (Emily) Hayes and sons, Dustin and Wesley of Barnstead, and Bryan (Nicole) Hayes and sons Draven and Kole of Strafford.
Russell worked for New England Telephone for 28 years, retiring in 1991. He was lifetime member of the Barrington Fire Department. Following in his Fathers' footsteps, he became Fire Chief in 1992 and served as Chief for 9 years. He worked on planning and construction of Public Safety building, retiring after it’s opening in 2001.
He then built an ultralight aircraft which he enjoyed flying for 10 years. His next interest was antique Tractor and Truck shows was enjoyment for him.
