Robert Morgan Duvall Robert Morgan Duvall passed away peacefully, while surrounded by many family members, at Wentworth Douglas Hospital in Dover New Hampshire on October 10, 2018, at the age of 95. He was born on January 19, 1923 in Damascus, Maryland, the son of Oliver Morgan Duvall and Fay (Watkins) Duvall. He is the last of his nine siblings; predeceased by his sisters; Shirley, Virginia, Rose and brothers, Edward, William, Paul, Gerald and Rodney. He graduated from Damascus High School in 1941 and enlisted in the United States Coast Guard in 1943. He served aboard LST 27 from the time it was commissioned in 1943 until it was decommissioned in the fall of 1945. After serving in the World War II North African Theater, his ship participated in the D-day invasion on Omaha Beach carrying troops of the 29th Army Division ashore. He was particularly proud of his ship's role in ferrying wounded troops back across to the channel to England during the invasion. After discharge from the service, he married Lois M. Denning, and has lived in Dover since 1946. They recently celebrated their 72 years of marriage together. He is survived by his wife Lois, daughter, Pamela Curran from Daytona Beach, Florida, daughter, Wendy Duvall from Hampton, NH, late son, Robert Duvall, son, Daniel and wife, Sandra Duvall of Durham, NH, daughter, Julie Duvall of Dover, NH and son, James Duvall from Boston, MA. Many grandchildren; Karen, Lynda, Aaron and wife Kendra, Daniel Jr., Thomas and Audrey; great grandchildren Nicole, Shannon, Taylor and Kayla and numerous nieces and nephews. His longevity was in no doubt attributable to the care and love by his wife Lois. He kept abreast and followed closely of all of the grandchildren and great-grandchildren's activities. He had an incredible memory; current affairs, loyal Red Sox and Patriot fan, love of politics national and local, cribbage tournaments with his daughter Wendy and proud of his role in World War II as one of the Greatest Generation. He has been a member of the Carpenters Union for more that 50 years and served as its business representative from 1953 to 1962, when he was appointed as New Hampshire Labor Commissioner, serving under five governors. He served in that capacity until 1981 when he resigned to take a position as Associate Director of Workers Compensation, a new job created by the Government of the District of Columbia. During the time he was Labor Commissioner, he served on various boards and commissions, as a member of the International Association of Governmental Labor Officials, the International Accident Boards and Commissions and the NH Safety Council of which he was a charter member of the American Judicature Society and NH Safety Council. He was a long time member of the American Legion Post #8 and a life member of the Dover Lodge of Elks #184. Since retiring, he has served as a Ward 4 Moderator in Dover and served as a member of the Dover Personnel Board. His will be missed by many and will be remembered for his positive attitude and upbeat demeanor. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Robert’s name to a charity of one’s choice. A funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Monday, Oct. 15, 2018 at Wiggin Purdy McCooey Dion Funeral Home with Father Agapit Jean, officiating.
