Obituary for Nancy S. Hall

Nancy Sturges Hall, formerly of Hyannisport and Hingham MA died on August 3, 2018 at the age of 89. Nancy grew up in Hyannisport with her parents George and Charlotte Sturges and her brother Dick. She graduated from Barnstable High School in 1946. Many of the friendships formed in Nancy’s years growing up on the Cape endured throughout her life. In 1996 when helping to organize her 50th class reunion Nancy would say “I have known some of these friends since kindergarten!”. As a young woman on the Cape she met her future husband Howard Brackett Hall. Nancy attended Simmons College before marrying Brackett Hall who would become her husband of 62 years. They married in September of 1950 and made their home on Forest Lane in Hingham where they lived for over 25 years raising their two children, Carolyn and Howard. They made many wonderful friendships in Hingham and enjoyed their years there. Brackett and Nancy always maintained their connection to Cape Cod making Hyannisport and then Centerville their permanent home after Brackett retired. Nancy loved the arts and making things beautiful. She had an appreciation for antiques and was a longstanding member of the Historical Society of Early American Decoration. She was an accomplished member of the Brazer Guild using techniques of stencil, gold leaf, and free hand bronze to replicate original artwork from the 1700 and 1800s on trays and furniture that filled her home. Gardening and horticulture were interests that Nancy enjoyed. She was a member of the Hingham Garden Club for 24 years and the Osterville Garden Club. She enjoyed arranging flowers and earned several awards including a blue ribbon at the Boston Flower Show. We take it for granted now but with the Hingham Garden Club she was part of early efforts to urge people not to litter. She could identify almost every flower, tree and bird and did her best to make sure her children could do the same. Nancy was a prolific painter using both watercolors and acrylics. Her favorite subjects were seascapes of the Cape. A member of both the Cohasset Golf Club and the Hyannisport Golf Club she enjoyed being outdoors and playing golf. She particularly enjoyed traveling with her husband and playing golf where ever they went. Recently Nancy resided in Dover, NH near her loving family. She leaves behind her daughter Carolyn Hall Schulten and son in law Steve Schulten, her granddaughters, Elizabeth Morse and Katherine Schulten, and six great granddaughters, who were the source of much joy. She leaves behind Maureen Hurney, loving companion to her son Howard, recently deceased. Nancy was predeceased by her beloved husband Brackett, whom she missed very much. She leaves nephews Bob, Jim, Richard and niece Martha Boutilier. Nancy attended summer church services at the Union Chapel in Hyannisport as did her mother. For those wishing to make a charitable donation in Nancy’s name she requested that the Union Chapel Association, Box 491, Hyannisport MA 02647 be considered. A memorial celebration for Nancy and her son Howard will be planned for the fall at the Union Chapel.
