Obituary for Mark Dana Mathewson

Mark “Sparky” D. Mathewson

Mark D. Mathewson, 59, of Rochester, NH died on Thursday, February 22, 2024, at home after a brief illness.

Mark was born on October 9, 1964, in Portsmouth, NH; the son of Herbert D. and Janice M. (Daigneau) Mathewson. He graduated from Dover High School in 1983, after attending Plymouth State College, he earned an Associate’s Degree from Hesser College in May,1992.

Mark worked in retail for many years, starting at Montgomery Ward in Newington, NH and then working at Olympia Sports in North Hampton, NH. He worked the last 23 years at Wall Industries in Exeter, NH as a manufacturing technician.

One of Sparky’s passions was sports. He enjoyed watching all of Boston’s professional sports teams, enjoying their many highs and lows over his lifetime. He was an All-State basketball player himself at Dover High School scoring 1,000 points (if you count his JV points as he would often say) and played in the 1983 Alhambra Classic. Mark and his close friend Chip would often talk about their legendary (in their minds) basketball game against Portsmouth High School that went into 5 overtimes.

Mark had a great sense of humor, he was always ready with a quick joke or witty one-liner, Mark even performed stand-up comedy in New England comedy clubs for a time. He opened for such acts as George Ham, Bob Marley and Motor Booty Affair. A line Mark might use in penning his obituary would be “Mark leaves nothing but a damaged liver and some expired coupons to Arby’s”.

Mark also enjoyed spending time with his nieces and nephews. He could often be found at many of their games, dance recitals and other performances. He was a very proud Uncle, telling friends about their many accomplishments. Mark will be missed by his family and many friends.

Mark is survived by his mother, Janice Mathewson of Dover, NH, sister Melissa Cunio of Rochester, NH, sister Marcie Michaud and brother-in-law Mike Michaud of North Hampton, NH, nephews, Connor Cunio and his wife Gillian Cunio of Farmington, NH, Michael Michaud of North Hampton, NH, nieces Ali Roger and her husband Derek Roger of Lee, NH and Julia Michaud of North Hampton, NH, great nephew Kaiden Roger and great niece Quinn Roger of Lee NH.

He was pre-deceased by his father Herbert Mathewson and his sister Lynn Mathewson.

A Celebration of Mark’s life will be held at The Loft Restaurant from 2:00-4:00pm on Sunday, March 10th at 58 New Rochester Road, Dover, NH.

In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Heart Association.
