Obituary for Marion Lynn Smith (Sinito)

Marion L Smith, 82, passed away in the early hours of Monday, December 19, 2022. Born February 22, 1940 in New York, New York to Ignatz “Tommy” Sinito and Emily (Kaletsarie) Sinito, Marion cherished her role as the oldest of four children, each of whom she loved fiercely. From an early age Marion was as sweet as she was strong, and a true social butterfly. These qualities gifted her with countless incredible friends throughout each chapter of her life. Even if she had just met you once, you felt like family. Marion graduated from Roslyn High School in 1958, leaving a lasting imprint with her senior quote, “I came, I saw, I conquered.” This quote will always ring true when remembering Marion. Shortly after graduating, she married her high school sweetheart, August “Brud” J. Smith.

Marion and Brud settled and raised their family on Long Island, welcoming two children, Thomas Smith of Wake Forest, North Carolina and Sandra (Smith) Feeney of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. To Marion, her children were her greatest accomplishment. As a mother, Marion created a truly special foundation of love within her family that could be felt in the warmth of her infamous phone calls or in her beautifully thought-out birthday cards. Marion cherished hosting family parties, vacations to the Caribbean, and Sunday dinners at her parent’s house, creating her fondest memories with her family, siblings, and cousins.

Marion was blessed with six new souls to love when her grandchildren were born. She doted on them, creating a strong, eternal bond with each one. Marion embodied a youthful spirit and loved laughing with her grandkids when they would imitate her New York accent, playing Scrabble and “May I” with them, and spending quality time around the dinner table. She enjoyed attending her grandsons’ sporting events and supporting all of her grandchildren in any endeavor they felt called to. Marion’s was the first card received and the first phone call answered on each of their birthdays, where she’d recite her favorite anecdote, “I remember the day you were born…”, because, of course, she was there for each one.

Marion was lucky enough to not only have one true love in life, but two. Marion met Jeff Gulmi by chance when they were paired to play a round of golf together, and they were one from that day on. Jeff and Marion spent years traveling up and down the east coast, from New Hampshire to Florida, playing and staying at various golf courses. Marion’s second biggest accomplishment, next to her children, was the hole-in-one she shot at Timber Point Golf Course on the 6th hole. Jeff knew how special Marion was, and always reminded her family he, in fact, felt like the lucky one. They married in September of 2006.

Marion is predeceased by her parents, Tommy and Emily Sinito, her brother Salvatore Sinito and his partner Matthew Paduano, her husband Jeffrey Gulmi, her brother-in-law David Barrett and high-school sweetheart August J. Smith. She is survived by her sister Sandra (Sinito) Barrett, brother Thomas Sinito and his wife Kathy, son Thomas Smith and his wife Merrill, daughter Sandra (Smith) Feeney, her six grandchildren Tyler Smith (Carolann), Travis Smith (Brittany), Kyle Smith (Alyssa), Jordan Feeney, Lindsay Feeney (fiancé Nate) and Matthew Feeney, her cousins, and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at a later time, so for now the family will be celebrating Marion’s beautiful life privately. If desired, in lieu of flowers, friends and family are welcome to make a donation to Birdies for the Brave in Marion’s honor. https://www.birdiesforthebrave.org/donate
