Margaret “Peggy” Shea, of Durham and Wolfeboro, died Monday, November 21, a month before her 88th birthday. She spent her last days surrounded by five generations of family and friends singing, sharing memories, and thanking her for her love, loyalty, sense of fun, and her faith in God and in us. Peggy’s ability to make friends wherever she went was legendary, and she treasured them all. She was proud to be a New Englander and a Red Sox fan from birth, but felt the real fun began when she met her soul mate, Bill Shea. Together, they raised seven kids of their own, and cared for countless others over the years. They shared their home and lives with elderly and young relatives, friends, and strangers in need. Mom was always the loving energy that made it all work. She also had many other roles in her life. She was a nurse, a reporter, an owner of several small businesses, an antiques appraiser, and a campaign worker through her decades, even doing TV ads with her daughter, former Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter, in 2006 and 2008. She had a passion for history, adventures, lobster dinners, and chocolate. Peggy leaves her seven children—Judy, David, Laurie, Carol, Mary, Billy, and Bob—son-in-law Gene Porter, daughter-in-law Jan Shea, and Amy Shea Thomas, her niece whom she helped raise. She also loved her grandchildren—Mary Carol, Susie, Scott, Rebecca, Jennifer, Sean, Brian, Kathleen, Kevin, Brendan, and Candy—great and great-great grandkids, and all those she adopted in her heart. Her amazing spirit is her lasting her gift to us.
