Obituary for Kathleen Ethel Young (Nolan)

Kathleen Young
Kathleen "Kathy" Young (nee Nolan), 85, of Rochester, NH, passed away on April 7, 2024 surrounded by family at Portsmouth Hospital.

Born on October 13, 1938, in Albany, NY, she lived most of her life, over 50 years, at Dover Point, NH and the past seven years in Rochester, NH.

Kathy was completely devoted to her family, especially those who called her "Nana." She cherished her independence, lived simply, and had a profound caring nature that touched countless lives. Though she has left us in physical form, her spirit will forever reside in our hearts. Her family could count on her always being available for a call or visit (except Thursday nights because that was “card night with the ‘girls’”), always being game for a road trip or to go grab a meal, and always having the Hallmark or Lifetime channel on if she was home. Nana was the center of most family gatherings, devoted to being present and engaged in her grandchildren’s lives. Her home was always open to the ‘kids’. She didn’t judge or begrudge; she was firm in her beliefs and took on every situation with a loving heart.

Kathy is survived by her brother Kenny Nolan (Rose) and sister-in-love Mary Nolan, her children Garry Nolan (Deb), Robert Young, and Debra Ricker (Steve), her grandchildren Jessica McKinley (Josh), Casey Nolan, Bobbie-Jo Young, Jeremy Nolan (Rachel), Stefanie Shea (Brian), Kyle Ricker (Leah), Ryan Ricker (Alexandria), great-grandchildren Jillian Young; Jackson, Paityn, Penelope, Emory, and Ramona Ricker; and Maverick and Alaina Ricker. Stepfamily included Ryan McKinley, Donita McDonald and Gabriel, Derek McDonald (Mary-Jane), Aaron, Aila, and Arthur. Other loved ones include her nieces, nephews and their families. Kathy was preceded in death by her father Edward J. Nolan, mother Emily C. Nolan, husband Thomas E. Young, and beloved siblings Edward "Buddy" Nolan, Dennis Nolan, and Elaine Nolan.

Kathy proudly retired from Wentworth Douglass Hospital (29 years) after a long career in the healthcare field. But her true life’s work was supporting, caring for and unconditionally loving her family and friends.

A celebration of her life is planned on May 24, 2024, at Purdy Memorial Chapel in Lee, NH, from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. A service will be held at 4:00 pm followed by refreshments. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the breast cancer charity of your choice in Kathy's memory (but if you can’t resist flowers, Kathy loved lilacs and carnations.)
