Obituary for Joyce J Braun

Joyce Jeanette Johnson Braun
October 2, 1946 – January 13, 2024

Joyce J. Braun wife of Joseph J. Braun Jr. (Jay) passed away peacefully Saturday afternoon after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

Born in Paterson, New Jersey on October 2, 1946, the daughter of Lester and Jeanette Johnson. She grew up in Paterson with two brothers Allan and Lester Jr. and lived in New Jersey until her adult years. She met her husband Joseph J Braun Jr. (Jay) on a blind date and the 56-year love story began.

Joyce and Jay began their family with the birth of their daughter Jill Joanne (1968) and their son Jeffrey John (1974). Notice that we all have the initials of JJB - that was Joyce. In 1976 the family packed up and journeyed to Unionville Connecticut where they would raise their children and make lifelong friends. Joyce could be seen with her bestie Betty walking their Irish Setter Buddy for their two-hour walks. Several times Buddy would get tired and lay down and not get back up and Joyce would have her neighbors drive by and offer them a ride home and as soon as the car door opened, Buddy would happily jump in the back seat, and they would enjoy the ride home. Joyce also worked for a privately owned bookstore and loved the children’s books the most. She worked there for many years until the business was sold.

In 1993, she celebrated the marriage of their daughter to Michael James Quigley, and became a Grammie to Caitlin Marie Quigley (1995) and Danielle Taylor Quigley (1998).

In 1992, the family moved to Forest Hill, Maryland and lived there for 20 years. Joyce, or her beloved name Grammie, would fly all by herself, this was a huge deal, up to New Hampshire to visit her Grandbabies twice a year and there was never a dull moment! Jay and Joyce would attend their local theater for plays and music, as Joyce believed in the standing ovation! They also loved their cruises and went on them with friends and family!

In 1998, she celebrated the marriage of her son to Lisa Michelle Chaplin and again became a Grammie to Michelle Lee Jackson (1990) and Taylor Nicole Braun (2004). They also lived in Maryland and Grammie was able to do what she loved most, to be a Grammie. She would always say that there is no feeling like arriving to see your Grandchildren and when they saw you, they would yell GRAMMIE and run into her arms.

In 2012 Joyce and Jay moved to Dover, New Hampshire. Now living closer to the Quigley’s and doing Family Dinner Night every Sunday, making her mother's cookies at Christmas, and the Egg Thing.

Joyce had three loves in her life, Jay, her husband, her family and her dogs. She grew up with Rusty and Dusty and then Mister, he was a chewer that got in a lot of trouble. Then they rescued McKeever, a puppy from a fair in NJ. Later Jill brought home Buddy the Irish Setter and he was rescued from the pound. When Joyce moved from Connecticut to Maryland, before they left, even though he had been gone a while, the door was opened to the house and to the car, and Mckeever was called so he too could go to Maryland.

Then Joyce relied on her children so that she could be a Grammie to her Grand-fur babies. In Maryland she would babysit for Max, Mowgley and Buster. When in New Hampshire she would love on Mr. Boots, McKeever2, Brady and Romeo. Oh the stories she would tell!

The Family wishes to express their deepest appreciation for the amazing care she has been given the past years at Riverside Rest Home on Unit 5 and the Activities Staff.

At the family’s request, donations can be made in
