Obituary for John F Norton Mr.

Rollinsford: John F. Norton, 93, of Clement Road passed away on Thurs., Oct. 13, 2011 at the Hyder Family Hospice House after a period of failing health. Uncle Johnny was born on Sept. 1, 1918 in Standish ME; the son of the late Leslie Earl Norton, Sr. and the late Marjorie Winship (Lunt) Norton. He moved to Clement Road in Rollinsford in 1926. Uncle Johnny went to Pearyard School which was a one room schoolhouse in Rollinsford. Then he continued on to Dover High School ; when he was 15 he lied and said he was 16 so he could work on the B&M Railroad from 1934-1937; he was the only person able to lift the 435# solid steel weight onto the car. While working he went onto UNH where he graduated in 1940 as a chemical engineer. He served our country proudly in the US Navy as a lieutenant from 1941-1946, stationed in Newport, RI in the Torpedo Division then to San Francisco, CA. When he came home from the service he worked for John Mansville in Nashua NH for 47 years retiring in 1987. He started a lumber saw mill on his own farm, cutting down his trees, and milling them into boards (lumber).He loved trains and working with wood. He was extremely proud to have quit drinking coffee in 1964. Uncle Johnny was an avid UNH football, Patriots and Red Sox fan. He was a lifetime Legionnaire. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by all his siblings, Charlie, Richard, William, Josie, Evelyn and Leslie, Jr. Uncle Johnny is survived by several loving nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in John's name to the Hyder Family Hospice House, 285 County Farm Road, Dover, NH 03820. Friends and family may call on Tues., Oct. 18, 2011 from 1-2:00 pm with a memorial service to be held at 2:00pm with Rev. Mark Rideout, officiating at Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave., Dover, NH. Interment will be at a later date at Pine Hill Cemetery in Dover, NH.
