Obituary for Jesse Perkins Gangwer

Jesse P. Gangwer, 89, of Madbury, NH passed away peacefully on April 7, 2021, surrounded by his loving family; June, Cathy and Sam.

Jesse was born in Miami on November 18, 1931. He graduated from Dover High School then continued on to UNH. He served in the United States Army at Aberdeen Proving Grounds during the Korean Conflict. He attended Keene State Teachers College where he met June, the love of his life.

They Married in 1957, and celebrated 64 years together. He worked on the family dairy farm, later converting it to a working apple orchard. In 1960 he acquired the Town and Campus block and business. This was just the beginning of many businesses and commercial ventures over the next several decades including the Tin Palace restaurant.

Jesse enjoyed being with his family, the outdoors, the farm, and especially traveling to Longboat Key Florida where he and his beautiful wife June enjoyed the sunsets. Other hobbies included bowling, cribbage and fly fishing.

Another highlight was UNH hockey with season tickets by the press box in the old Snively Arena, rocking the stands! He was known for his generosity and support of others in the Durham and Madbury communities, and his positive view of life. He always ended a spirited conversation with the phrase “Peace and Love!” He was one of a kind and an icon on Main Street in the town of Durham. He had a heart of gold, helping everyone he could, whether local or from afar. He would cash checks for students, some of the IOU’s would be paid back years later. He loved UNH athletics and supporting student organizations.

Jesse is the beloved husband of 64 years to his wife June; Loving father to his daughter Catherine and husband Edward of Madbury; his son Samuel and wife Laura of Bedford, NH; proud Grampy to six beautiful grandchildren: Kaitlyn, Benjamin, Megan, Olivia, Christopher and Jaden; and two cherished great grandchildren, Foster and Cullen.

He is predeceased and reunited with his parents Mabel and Jess, sister Beverly; his beloved son Allen, and beautiful granddaughter Alicia.
