Obituary for Jay William Heckman Mr.

JAY WILLIAM HECKMAN February 27, 1920 – March 8, 2014 Durham: Jay William Heckman passed away peacefully at the Hyder Family Hospice House in Dover, N.H. with his family at his side. Born in Reading, Pennsylvania, he lived in Detroit during the Great Depression years and then resided in Buffalo, NY for most of his life. A World War II Veteran, Mr. Heckman enlisted in the US Army Air Force in January 1942 and was honorably discharged in January 1946. He served in the 54th and 374th Troop Carrier Wings in the South Pacific Theatre transporting troops and cargo to forward operating positions. As Chief Warrant Officer, he was decorated with the Air Medal, Distinguished Unit Citation, Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Ribbon with 7 Battle Stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon and Good Conduct Medal. Mr. Heckman worked in the insurance business for most of his career. An active volunteer, he was Director of The Greater Buffalo Insurance Association, Board Chairman for The New York Heart Association and a Member of the Buffalo Rotary Club for more than 40 years. Mr. Heckman is survived by his children: Nancy H. Blasberg, Pamela Heckman and Jeffrey C. Heckman (Julia M. Doetsch) and his grandchildren: Matthew F. Blasberg, Elizabeth A. (Libby) Blasberg, Edward F.(Ned) Heckman and Sarah L. Heckman. A memorial service will be held later this year.
