Obituary for Jay H. Daly Mr.

Jay Howard Daly passed away Monday, February 20th, 2012 surrounded by family and friends. He was born July 12th, 1951 in Bangor, Maine to Charlotte Salisbury Daly and William Howard Daly. The Daly’s lived in Brewer, Maine and enjoyed many activities including spending time at family camps, hunting, fishing and enjoying nature. His early love of nature led him to join Brewer Boy Scout Troop 1 where he achieved the level of Eagle Scout. He later became Troop Leader for Bangor’s Boy Scout Troop 17. Jay became involved at an early age with Agassiz Village, a children’s camp geared towards giving youngsters an outdoor experience in which to thrive and reach their full potential. Jay worked at Agassiz for over 10 years. His love of nature also led him to a career with the League of Conservation Voters, a non-partisan, non-profit group which helped to elect responsible politicians with a commitment to protecting our environment and wild spaces. Jay was an avid historian and antiquarian. This was borne out in the Daly Family’s numerous trip to the historic battlefields of our nation, an emphasis on history in his college years at the University of Maine, Orono, a number of years teaching and finally through a 30 year career as an antiques and collectibles auctioneer and appraiser. This included nearly 15 years as President of Yankee School of Auctioneering, a nationally recognized auctioneering school that graduated over 150 successful auctioneers under Jay’s leadership. No matter what he did, Jay always gave something back to his community. He was always willing to pitch in for a good cause whether dressing as Santa to take gifts to children at the holidays, putting on his tuxedo to serve as auctioneer at benefit auctions all across New England or supporting the National Auctioneers Association fundraising efforts for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Jay’s favorite hobby was Texas Hold-Em Poker where he made numerous good friends and happily won many hands and tournaments. After every poker game, Boy Scout meeting, election campaign or auction, Jay loved nothing more than bringing all involved together for a good meal, "Good food and good friends” was one of his chief pleasures. Jay is survived by his step-daughter Maggie Rose and her partner Duane Allison, step-daughter Edith Rose Hall and her husband Robert Hall, step-son Bruce Rose and wife Nancy, grandson Benjamin Laramie, granddaughters Kelly, Wendy & Julia Rose, ex-wife and longtime dear friend Mona-Ellen Cheney, aunt Jane Mitchell and many cousins. In addition Jay is survived by numerous close friends all of whom will treasure their memories of Jay for years to come. Deepest thanks go to the members of the local Huntington’s Disease Support group, whose members were with Jay every step of the way through his long fight with his disease and to the staff of Riverside Rest Home for their dignified, caring support of Jay. A memorial service & reception will be held on Wednesday, May 9th, 2012 at noon. Both the service and reception will be held at the Purdy Memorial Chapel in Lee, NH . All are invited to bring a photo and a story for the memory board, a memory or adventure that you shared with Jay, thoughts and remembrances to share with us all about this kind man who left us all too soon. In lieu of flowers, Jay asked that donations may be made to: New Hampshire Affiliate of the Huntington’s Disease Society of America (https://www.hdsa.org/nhaff/nhdon.html) or to Agassiz Village (http://www.agassizvillage.com/h/donations.asp)
