Obituary for James A Stewart

Dover-James A. Stewart, 79, of Silver St. passed away Thursday February 15, 2018 at the Wentworth Douglass Hospital in Dover. James was born August 2, 1938 in Goffstown, NH and was the son of the late James Stewart naturalized citizen in 1943 from Paisley, Scotland and Juliette (Robidoux) Stewart of Manchester NH. James received a BA magna cum laude from St. Anselm College 1963 in Biology and received his PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Connecticut. He was on the UNH faculty for 33 years in the Biochemistry department where he taught numerous courses over the years. He was Chairman of the Biochemistry department, Associate Dean for Research College of Life Sciences and Agriculture, Associate Director of the NH Agricultural Experiment Station, Interim Vice President for Research and was instrumental in the planning/building of Rudman Hall. James served in the United States Navy from July 1956 to Aug 1959 stationed on the USS Wasp. He attained rank of Petty officer Second Class and was trained as an Aviation Electrician Second Class. His electrical knowledge stayed with him and he shared this skill with all of his children. James also enjoyed many hobbies; fly-fishing, reading, gardening, woodworking and the performing arts. He was especially proud of his large gardens and backyard farm including pigs, chickens, calves and milking goats. In retirement he volunteered at Dover Adult Literacy Center specializing in math tutoring. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Gail Stewart of Dover, two daughters; Rebecca Soojian and her husband Robert of Leicester, MA, Elizabeth Hagman and her husband Eric of Dover, and one son; Daniel Stewart and his wife Cassandra Kelley of Plymouth. He also leaves behind five grandchildren; Joshua, Joseph and Jessica Soojian, Alecia and Jacob Hagman, and numerous nieces and nephews. He leaves his Brother Robert Stewart and wife Lorraine (deceased) and his Sister Jeanie Boisvert and husband Gerard. Visiting hours will be held Monday February 19, 2018 from 12-1pm at Purdy Memorial Chapel, 2 Concord Rd, Lee, NH. A memorial service will follow at 1pm with a reception immediately after.
