Obituary for Herman "Joe" Casey Mr.

Dover: Herman “Joe” Casey, 82, died Friday, June 22, 2012 surrounded by family. He was born in Boston, MA on November 17, 1929, the son of William and Hazel (Emery) Casey. He graduated Nute High School in 1946. Joe served our country in the Korean War as a Sergeant in the US Army, receiving the Korean Combat Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, United Nations Service Medal and Combat Infantry Badge. He also served as a Lieutenant in the National Guard. He retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a Marine Engineering Technician. He was a square dance caller for 62 years starting with traditional dancing and made the transition to contemporary square dancing. During his square dance career he was a caller for six clubs and a guest caller throughout New England and New York. Joe was a founder and charter member of the Tri-State Callers Association, member of Caller Lab, founding member and chairman of the New England Square & Round Dance Cooperation Committee for twelve years. He served on the executive board of the New England Council of Callers Association, New England Council of Round Table Dance Teachers Association, and LEGACY (Dancer – Caller – Round Leader Association). Joe called at all 51 New England Square & Round Table Dance conventions. A recipient of the Yankee Clipper award in 1981, Tri-County Maine Square Dance Festival award, and was inducted into the Square Dance Foundation Hall of Fame in 1994. In 2008, he was inducted into the Nute High School & Library Wall of Distinction for “The Arts”. Joe was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, co-worker and friend. Joe is survived by his wife Phyllis of 58 years; his sons, Donald Casey and wife Debra, and Paul Casey and his wife Mary; his daughters, Patricia Farnum, and Janice Mulligan and husband Peter; ten grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; his sisters, Emily Bunker of Milton, NH, Marie Titcomb and husband Harvey of Lady Lake, FL; and his brothers, Robert Casey and wife Lorraine of Haverhill, MA and William Casey and wife Carol of Barrington, NH. Memorial contributions may be made in Joe Casey’s name, to the Square Dance Foundation of New England, Inc. at 238 Woburn St., Reading, MA 01867-2838 or to a charity of one’s choice. A Memorial Service will be held on Sat., July 14th, at 2:00pm at St. John’s United Methodist Church, 28 Cataract Ave., Dover, NH, 03820.
