Obituary for Harry Z Kageleiry

DOVER – Lt Col Harry Z. Kageleiry (USA-Ret), 90, died July 11, 2023. He was born January 24, 1933, in Dover NH to Charles and Diamond (Bograkos) Kageleiry.

He graduated from Dover High School in 1951, enlisted in the Army in 1952, and deployed to Korea after 16 weeks of infantry training. He married his wife, Barbara V. French in 1956. In 1958 he graduated from the University of New Hampshire as an ROTC Distinguished Military Graduate, received a Regular Army Commission as a Second Lieutenant of Infantry, and retired from active duty in 1979. His military service includes assignments to an infantry battalion of the 3rd Infantry Division in Korea during the Korean war, as the Senior Advisor to a Vietnamese ranger battalion during his first tour of duty in Vietnam and to an airborne infantry battalion of the 101st Airborne Division during his second tour of duty in Vietnam. Some of his military awards include the following: Combat Infantryman Badge (2nd Award), Ranger Tab, Senior Parachutist Badge, Bronze Star Medal for Valor, Air Medal (6th Award), Valorous Unit Award and the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry.

After retiring from the U.S. Army, he attended Rivier College in Nashua NH for two years to be certified as a teacher and then taught mathematics and computer science at Saint Thomas Aquinas High School in Dover NH (daytime) and at Hesser College in Portsmouth NH (evenings) until retiring in 1994. Thereafter, he and his wife Barbara spent a great deal of time camping and traveling throughout the United States and Canada in their travel trailer or motor home.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Barbara (French); by his daughters Karen Breton (Dennis) and Heidi Turcotte (Steven); granddaughters Jessica O’Brien (Tim) and Amy Conway (Mark); step-granddaughters Erin Maskwa (Chris) and Meagan Turcotte; great-grandsons Cameron and Tyler O’Brien, great-granddaughter Emma Conway; step-great-grandsons Seamus Glidden and Thomas Maskwa; step-great-granddaughters Lily and Grace Maskwa. He is also survived by his siblings Peter (Jane) and Gregory Kageleiry; and by his brothers-in-law Lee French (Judy) and Donald French Sr.

He was predeceased by his parents and siblings Zacharias, Nicholas (Stasia), Sophie Chamberlin, George (Katina), Mary Yannekis (James), James (Frances) and sister-in-law Cathie Kageleiry (Greg).

Services – Visiting hours will be held from 4-6 on Tuesday July 18, 2023, at Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home 655 Central Avenue Dover NH. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday July 19, 2023, at the same location. Interment to follow at Pine Hill Cemetery.
