Obituary for Harold R. Smith Mr.

Newmarket: Harold Robert Smith “Smitty”, age 74, of Newmarket, passed away unexpectedly at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital on March 27th 2014, due to complications of existing medical conditions. Harold was born in Nottingham, to Robert H. Smith, Sr. and Alice (Bond) Smith. He grew up in Dover and attended Dover High School, and was a U.S. Army veteran. Harold was a mechanic by trade, and was best known as the owner and operator of Smitty's Sunoco in Durham, having retired in 2005. Although to the outside world he may have had a rough and gruff exterior, those who were close to him knew that family and friends were his primary focus. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, who worked very hard throughout his life to provide for his family. Harold enjoyed spending winters at his condo in Cocoa Beach, Florida, and summers at his camp in Barrington. Harold was also an avid Red Sox and Celtics fan and a keen Lottery player, always believing that he would someday “win it big”. Harold is survived by his daughters and son-in-laws Lisa & Guy Poisson, Christine & Christopher Hawkins, Jennifer & Chris LaFogg; his grandchildren, Kaleigh, Monica, Michelle, Andrew, Dylan, Emma, Jackson and Joseph; his siblings Robert H. Smith, Jr., Priscilla Lent, Patricia Dowaliby and Dixie Jacques; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, special friends and his beloved parrot “Bubba”. Harold is predeceased by his wife of 45 years, Maria (Hashem) Smith; his first wife Dorothy (Wojnar) Smith; his parents, Robert and Alice Smith and sisters Sally Jean Smith and Linda Jewel. Friends and family may call from 5-6 p.m. on Thursday, May 1, 2014 at Purdy Memorial Chapel, 2 Concord Rd.(Rte. 4W), Lee, with a memorial service to be held at 6 p.m. with Deacon Robert Gagnon, officiating.
