Obituary for Franklin Ferguson West

Franklin F. West, age 100, passed away on Sunday, October 10, 2021 at the Wentworth Home in Dover , NH. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Jonathan and Heidi West of Berwick, ME, and his daughter and son-in-law, Rachel and Brian Tipton of Rochester, NH. He is preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Mae West, and by his son, David F. West. Frank has 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Frank was born on Sept 21, 1921, in Millville, NJ. He started college at the University of Idaho but then was swept up into WWII. He joined the Navy and was involved in the Sicilian action for D-Day then in the Pacific theater. After the war, he went on to college at Rutgers and earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He worked for many years as a Quality Control Manager at the former Clarostat in Dover, Moore Business Machines in Dover, and then at Acushnet Company, the maker of Titleist golf balls, in South Dartmouth, MA.

Frank lived much of his life in Dover, NH. He and Mae moved to South Dartmouth, MA in 1976 and lived there until his retirement. They then moved to Berwick, ME, where they lived for over 20 years. Frank raised his 3 children in Dover, NH, and loved to take them camping and hiking. He liked going mountain climbing in the White Mountains, often accompanied by family and friends. He also loved to travel and visited much of the USA, Japan, Puerto Rico, Central America, and much of Europe, including several trips to Spain and one to Russia.

Frank was a member of St John’s United Methodist Church of Dover for many years, the Appalachian Mountain Club, the Pease Greeters, a lifetime member of the South Berwick VFW (Dumont-Lessard Post 4485) and the American Legion (Charles S. Hatch Post 79). He was active in the American Society of Quality Control during his working years. He will be remembered as a gracious, kind, and loving man.

A viewing is scheduled for Friday, October 22, 2021, at the Purdy Funeral Home in Dover from 4 pm to 6 pm. In lieu of flowers a donation to the Wentworth Home for the Aged is requested.
