Obituary for Edith M. Bowen (Bowen)

Lt. CDR Edith M. Bowen passed away peacefully after a brief illness on November 9, 2023, at Durgin Pines in Kittery, ME. Edith was born in Springfield, MA on July 18, 1927. The daughter of Edith A. Bowen (Haskins) and Frank Bowen. Edith was predeceased by her four siblings, Doris Bowen, Frances Twining, Clifford Bowen, and Lawrence Bowen.
Edith lived a very simple and content life. At a time when most woman did not seek out a career, she decided to go to Springfield College of Nursing. Upon graduating in 1950 she joined the United States Armed Services. As a USN nurse she served her country around the world, including Japan, which she enjoyed immensely. Edith loved travelling and the outdoors and spent any off time she had travelling to new places near and far.
Her last assignment for the USN was at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, ME. After her service commitment ended Edith retired as a Lieutenant Commander from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and settled in Dover, NH.
After retirement Edith had several hobbies but quilting was her true love. She has many beautiful quilts that are hand sewn that she has displayed at the Rochester Fair and given to family members. Edith also loved to walk and garden. Her faith was also very important to her, she was a member of the First Parish Church of Somersworth for many years. Growing up, animals were always a big part of the Bowen household and Edith was no different. She was never without a pet, but her favorites, without a doubt, were her cats Susan B. Anthony and Priscilla.
Blessed with good health, she lived independently in her home in Dover until the age of 92. Soon after her 92nd birthday Edith moved to The Residence at Silver Square and was very happy there for the remainder of her life. While at Silver Square Edith enjoyed chatting with her many new friends, walking outside on nice days, puzzling, any activities remembering those who served in the armed forces, and visits from her friends and family.
Edith is survived by her nephew Stephen Twining as well as many great, and great, great, and even great, great, great nieces and nephews. She was an honest, hardworking, loyal, unique person who had much to offer to those that knew her. She will be greatly missed.
Family and friends will gather to remember Edith at 10am on Friday, November 17th with a service to follow at 11am. Both the gathering and service will be at Wiggin and Purdy Funeral Home in Dover, NH. Burial will follow at Pine Hill Cemetery in Dover, NH. All are welcome to join us for a light lunch at The Residence at Silver Square on the 3rd floor to celebrate Edith and her life well lived.
