Obituary for David Wilkens

David Michael John Wilkens, known to his loved ones as Dave, passed away peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by family, on December 1, 2023 at Wentworth Douglas Hospital in Dover, New Hampshire after a lifetime battle with Type 1 diabetes. He was 34 years old. Born on April 21, 1989 in Laconia, New Hampshire, Dave was a strong-willed and caring individual. He had a deep love for his family and friends, always protecting and caring for them with unwavering loyalty. Dave had a lifelong dream of joining the Air Force, a testament to his courageous spirit. Growing up, Dave spent his time working alongside his father at Windy Hill Kennel in Gilmanton, training German Shepherd Dogs. From a young age he loved reading Goosebumps, Harry Potter, the Lord of the Rings, Shakespeare and absolutely anything else he could get his hands on. He enjoyed embarking on road trips, anywhere he possibly could, always eager to invite others to join him on his adventures. He and his lifelong best friend, Kacey, were known for their mischievous escapades together. Roaming in the woods with their BB guns, setting off fireworks on frozen ponds, and bonding around campfires. Dave will be deeply missed by his family. He is survived by his father John Wilkens, his mother Deborah Wilkens, his older sisters Johanna and her husband Dan, Sarah and her husband Dan, and Summer and her husband Chris, and his younger sister Megan and her husband Bob. He also leaves behind his nieces Abi, Julie, and Stormy, as well as his nephews Kayden and Dayton. Dave's loss is also mourned by countless other lifelong friends and family who had the privilege of knowing him. In honor of Dave's memory, a Viking ceremony of life will be held in the summer of 2024, with the exact date to be determined. This ceremonial farewell reflects his adventurous spirit and the impact he had on those around him. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the The National Kidney Foundation. This organization was dear to Dave's heart, and your support will help in their mission to improve the lives of those affected by kidney disease and renal failure. Dave's departure has left a void in the lives of all who knew him. His strength, protectiveness, and love will forever be cherished. May he rest in peace, and may his spirit continue to guide and inspire us all.
