Obituary for Dale Wilson Rice

Dale Wilson Rice, 86, died Friday November 30th, 2018 at home in Nottingham, NH. He is survived by his wife, Raelene Shippee-Rice, whose loving care made it possible for him spend his final years at home, his son, Kenneth Rice, his daughters, Phoebe Rice and Karen Rice, his first wife and mother of his children Anna Rice, Raelene’s children Jennifer Long, Hilary Usiatynski, Matthew Brand, Malcolm Brand, and 11 grandchildren. He is also survived by his canine companions Marina (his pride and joy Newfy), Remi and Halloween. The only child of Jess and Olive Wilson Rice, he was born November 21, 1932 and grew up in South Dayton NY, on the farm that his parents had built, accompanied by a much-loved Newfoundland dog, Monty. Mr. Rice received his bachelor’s degree from MIT and after a brief stint at Caltech, returned to MIT to complete a PhD in physical chemistry in the laboratory of Walter Stockmayer. He worked for Corning Glass Works for many years before moving to New Hampshire to work for Centorr Vacuum Industries, eventually to start his own company, Delta Q Laboratories, specializing in high temperature technology. A warm, generous, and patient man, he was possessed of an incredible breadth of skills and knowledge in addition to his professional pursuits. He enjoyed woodworking, horticulture, arboriculture, glassblowing and flameworking, mechanical tinkering, photography, designing two beautiful additions for his 1835 home and music. He enjoyed playing the piano with a particular fondness for Chopin and Ragtime and had a knack for improvisation. He was a regular attendee of the Boston Symphony Orchestra for many years. A member of the Durham Unitarian-Universalism Fellowship, Mr. Rice led many Sunday programs, and held key local and district leadership positions in New York and New Hampshire. He loved Star island, New Hampshire and attended or led numerous religious education conferences there. He was well known for his puns. His quiet, gentle ways and sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him. A memorial service will be held on December 15th at the Durham Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at 1:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the MIT Scholarship Fund, Durham (NH) Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, or charity of your choice.
