Obituary for Charles Enoch McLean Jr. Mr.

UPDATE 11/7/14 CHANGES CHARLES ENOCH McLEAN, Jr. Lt Col Charles E. “MAC” McLean, USMC, Ret. 97, of Durham, NH, passed away peacefully October 14, 2014. He was the widower of two fabulous wives, Alice “Wendy” (Wingate) and Carolyn “Carrie” (Robertson). He was born in Enfield, CT, son of Charles E., Sr. and Theresa C. (MacLeod) McLean. He graduated from Winslow High School, ME in 1935, entered the U.S. Naval Academy and graduated in 1941 and was commissioned a 2ndLt in the U.S. Marine Corps. He flew 88 combat missions in his beloved F4U Corsair in both World War II and Korea and amassed over 4000 hours flying both prop and jet planes, most of the hours aircraft carrier based. He was a much decorated Marine fighter pilot earning 2 Distinguished Flying Crosses, a Bronze Star with valor and many other medals and campaign ribbons. He retired from the Marine Corps in 1961. Mac moved to Durham, NH and started his second career as a teacher of Science and Math at Noble High School, ME, retiring in 1979. Known for his oratory and writing skills he became one who speaks his mind with enthusiasm and passion. He was active in the political circles of Durham, the State of New Hampshire and the country. He was an early participant in the Pease Greeters Program and continued up until the month of his death, welcoming plane loads of troops being deployed to and from the Middle East. He amassed a wide circle of individual friends throughout the country who honored, respected and loved him. As a member of the Marine Corps League he was active in local schools with his story of Patriotism and during the past few years had a close association with members of the U.S. Army and Air Force ROTC at UNH. Mac is survived by 3 children with Wendy: a son, Charles E., III and his wife Lynne (Wall) of Naples, FL and two daughters, Kathy C. of Lehigh Acres, FL and Jo A. of Haverhill, MA and three stepdaughters of Carrie’s: Joan Robertson of Santa Fe, NM, Cynthia Schlattmann of Basin, WY and Betsy Fenwick of Brunswick, ME. There are numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. It is well known that Mac enjoyed a good meal! While he was still able to drive his car(a la Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride), he would often visit his niece, Mary Prenaveau, especially during the holidays. After two or three platefuls of food, he would dig into the desserts and have one of each! He was particularly fond of Mary’s daughter Emily’s apple pie. She baked the last one he enjoyed as they shared the same birthday. He will be sorely missed by the Palmer/Prenaveau Tribe. He was particularly proud of his Scottish Heritage and enjoyed several trips to Scotland with Carrie. Every time he heard the bag pipes, a big smile appeared on his face and he would be transported there. When ordering breakfast, waitresses knew "Scottish Muffins" were to be served instead of English Muffins! God bless and Amen! In addition to his beloved Maine coon cat, Pudder, he is also survived by Bill Drew his constant traveling companion for the past 6 years, having met him at Pease Greeters. In addition, there are those who truly fell in love with him: Joann Huber, his “eyes” for the past several years; Judi Mayday, his 24/7 caregiver for the past year; his recent traveling friend Frannie Randall; 1stLt Jennifer Aspinwall, USAF, his escort to the last three Marine Corps Balls; Catalina DeOcampo Bakas, a huge supporter and fellow Pease Greeter; many of the female cadets of the AFROTC unit at UNH; Marissa Mattu and Isaiah Winterbottom, U.S. Marine Reservists, and so many many others in his life. A highlight for Mac was a weekly meeting he arranged years ago with veterans and others while they dined at his Tuesday morning breakfast gathering at Young’s Restaurant in Durham. A celebration of Mac’s life will be held at the Great Island Common, 301 Wentworth Road (RT. 1B), New Castle, NH on November 11, 2014 from 4 – 8 PM.
