Obituary for Carol Gagne

DOVER- Carol Gagne of Union Street in Dover, New Hampshire born Carol Bennett to parents Anna Mae (Arlin) and Philip Samuel Bennett in Rochester, New Hampshire on December 22, 1942, succumbed to complications of esophageal cancer Monday, August 13, 2018. A proud, independent woman, Carol resided in her home with her friend and companion, “Izzie,” her cat. Carol enjoyed the company of many family cats over the years. She looked forward to daily visits from neighbors walking their dogs down Union Street, especially “Dude” who stopped at her door each day for a treat. Accordingly, Carol’s favorite charity was the Cochecho Valley Humane Society. Carol had many special neighbors over the years, wherever she lived, and maintained lasting friendships. Carol’s Red Sox baseball game viewing was not to be interfered with. During her hospitalization and treatment she did not miss a televised game. Carol’s independence became apparent in 1961 when she started her family. Carol (Devereaux) Gagne raised five respectful, hardworking children. All survive her and were with her during her period of decline. Her children include Ann Marie (Devereaux) Clark of Dover, Bonnie Lee (Devereaux) Briggs of Somersworth, John Edward Devereaux of North Berwick, Laura Jean Devereaux of Newmarket and James Edward Gagne of Lebanon. Each of Carol’s children brought a special grandchild, nine in total, who knew Carol as “Nana” – Jessica Clark, Dian (Clark) Maruca, Ashley Clark, Ryan Grass, Noah Storm Devereaux, Amanda (Devereaux) Rollins, Cody Bickford, Ryleigh Gagne and Aiden Gagne. Carol’s family also included five great-grandchildren, Trevor Rollins, Sofie Rollins, Emma Hastings Grass, Ryan Sullivan Grass, and Finnegan Clark Maruca. Carol is survived by sons’-in-law Ernie Clark of Dover and Carl Briggs of Somersworth, and daughters’-in-law Heather (Semones) Devereaux of North Berwick and Kelly (Kimball) Gagne of Lebanon. Also, grandsons’-in law Daniel Maruca and Steve Rollins and granddaughter-in-law Jennifer Grass. Carol taught her children by example, working while raising her children. Her final sixteen years of employment prior to retirement were as a reliable and dedicated employee of Days Inn of downtown Dover. Carol grew up in Rochester, moved to Dover in 1960 and held fond childhood memories of her maternal grandparents Ida (Whitehouse) and Lorenzo D. Arlin, and her special Aunt Bertha and Uncle Raymond Merrill. Carol is survived by her cousin Frances Marsters of Rochester. Carol was predeceased by her older brother Leverne Carl Bennett in 2011 and sister-in-law Lorraine (Labonte) Bennett. Aunt Carol remained very close with brother “Brubby’s” children Debbie Collier, Susan Bennett, Terri O’Brien, Patty Deely, David Bennett and Heidi Bennett, all of the Rochester area. Carol and her family were very appreciative of the dignified, care extended to her by the doctors, nurses and staff of the Seacoast Cancer Center and the Wentworth Douglas Hospital Garrison Wing, fourth floor nurses and aides, who kept her comfortable and smiling every day. With their assistance Carol remained positive throughout her illness. Carol was especially appreciative of her niece Terri O’Brien’s affection and support. Calling hours will be from 11:00 am- 1:00pm on Thursday, August 23, 2018 at Wiggin Purdy McCooey Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave, Dover, NH 03820. Per Carol’s wishes there are no funeral services.
