Obituary for Barbara Emma Hanna (Leavens)
Barbara E. Hanna
With great sorrow, we announce the death of Barbara E. Hanna who passed away on January 25, 2024, at Carriage Hill Assisted Living. Barbara Emma Leavens was born in the Port Norfork section of Dorchester Massachusetts and grew up in Squantum Massachusetts.
She is predeceased by her husband Herbet Hanna, her parents Merrill and Josephine (Ulrich) Leavens, her brothers Merrill Leavens and Robert Leavens.
She is survived by her brother Harold Leavens of California and her five loving children: Karen MacDonald of Lee, NH; Bill MacDonald of Salisbury, MA; Mark MacDonald of Pepperell MA: Joanne (MacDonald) McGovern of New Ipswich, NH; and Janine (MacDonald) McBride of Pepperell, MA. She was surrounded and found great joy with her 10 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and first great granddaughter.
Barbara married William James MacDonald in 1949 and moved to Detroit Michigan to work in the auto industry. They returned to New England and moved to Littleton MA where they raised their 5 children. Barbara was a devoted mother and involved in the St Anne church serving in the sodality. She married Herbert Hanna in 1989 and cared for her mother in her home in Squantum, MA until her death in 2000 when they moved to York, ME. Barbara enjoyed many years in this seaside town and made many friends through her work in the garden club. Her love of flowers and gardening gave her and others much joy.
Her outgoing joyous love of life will be missed by all she touched. The family would like to express a special thank you to the staff of Carriage Hill Assisted Living for the wonderful care they provided.
Friends may call from 10-11:30 am Friday, February 2nd at Purdy Memorial Chapel, 2 Concord Road (Rte. 4), Lee, NH 03824.
Funeral Mass will be held at 12 noon, Friday, February 2nd at Saint Thomas More Church, 6 Madbury Road, Durham NH. All are welcome to a reception following the mass at the Three Chimney’s Inn, 17 Newmarket Road, Durham, NH.
